Celebrating 16 Years: My Journey in Video Production

Brad Wells

A “Sweet 16” is pretty special. A 16th birthday is filled with the excitement of getting your license. A Sweet 16 in college basketball’s March Madness is the validation of hard work and effort for a team that came together for a magical season. A 16 year work anniversary is pretty sweet too, and reflecting on my time at Around The Corner Productions, a lot has happened.

Taking a Leap

My first day on the job was April 1st, 2008. I left a radio station job and joined the ATCP team to get back into video production (which I studied at the University of Northern Iowa). As I walked in the door, the first thing I heard was, “April Fools! We actually can’t hire you,” – before bursting into laughter. All three of us appreciated the delivery of a well timed line. That’s when I knew a career telling stories with other creatives was going to be fun.

In the beginning, I wrote stories for a young TV show, Panther Sports Talk, and created scripts for clients aiming to reach local and regional audiences. Each project prepared us for the next, and opened up new doors along the way. My excitement for creating videos grew as the audience for our video services expanded. We produced videos for new industries and global companies with a larger target audience.

It Takes a Team

I need to make it clear that I have not done this on my own. The best part about the past 16 years is that I have connected with so many wonderful people while growing into an expert storyteller. I’m fortunate to be part of a creative team that comes together to push the limits needed to produce high-quality videos. I love the collaborative culture that comes from working with a variety of clients and industry professionals, many of whom have become good friends. It’s been awesome working together, and I am proud of each story we’ve been asked to tell.

Personally, I have enjoyed the work-life balance ATCP has provided. I’ve been given the flexibility to chase my kids’ activities and to freelance as a television announcer for professional and collegiate sporting events. I truly enjoy working with new producers and videographers on live events. It demands quick problem solving skills, and a calm demeanor while under pressure. I firmly believe my time spent announcing sporting events has made me a better producer and storyteller for ATCP’s video projects.s quick problem solving skills, and a calm demeanor while under pressure.
